Diana, I simply had to write to you to let you know how inspiring your 2 day PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT was for me.
Over the years I have developed a good understanding of each piece of the literacy puzzle but I never seemed able to grasp the ‘whole’ picture and suddenly it all came together for me last Thursday and Friday. It’s like you have helped me put the puzzle together and now I can manipulate all the pieces, then take them out, fit some together all the whist having the whole picture in my mind. I feel a little dismayed that it has taken me 10 years of my teaching career to get to this point, but I am extremely excited to say I finally get it! I understand the role of language and phonological awareness in developing literacy skills in children, but more importantly you have explained so well how these components work; when in a children's life they are most crucial to address and the logical progression of these skills. As well as the difference between the skills of blending and segmenting and how the ability to do one doesn't necessarily mean that the other has been mastered.
You gave me so many, what Oprah calls, Ah! moments over the two days. You have reignited my passion for teaching literacy. I cannot wait to use your strategies and activities with my students.
I have used your framework of the progression of phonological awareness skills and language based skills to draw up a matrix and connect them with the English Reading and Writing sub-strands and Year 1 Report Grade allocations (provided by the Education Department.) I am finding it helpful to see where I am heading and what needs to be covered in a more systematic approach.

I found those two days so inspiring and came back to my class with a renewed vision for how I should be approaching my programme. I wanted to take this opportunity to give you some feedback. After K-1 teachers completed your Professional Development in March this year we have worked very hard implementing your program in our K-1 classes. Can I just say that we are loving your programs. It is so fantastic to have a program that is so air tight and guides us each term so that we all know what everyone is doing. We have implemented both the literacy and language programs including a home based comprehension program this year and we are seeing FANTASTIC results from our children. I feel very confident that we have prepared them well for formal literacy learning in Year 1 and we are really excited to see how the year 1 teachers feel this year’s children are placed compared to other years. We also feel very confident that with your program we can meet the needs of the National curriculum next year. Keep up the great work and thank you!!!
